Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Venue: Bamber Sewing Machines

The cutest dress on the block. Our Fit & Flare dress could be sewn up in retro cotton as a sweet and wearable day dress, or made from something special to become a fiercely flirty occasion dress. A style designed to flatter whilst giving a little more movement than a wiggle dress and you can decide how long or short you make the length of the skirt. Choose to make either a sleeveless shift-style dress or one with a flattering mid-length sleeve and make the ultimate dress to flatter your figure.

Based at Bamber Sewing Machines, you’ll find like-minded classmates; expert tutors and all the fabrics, trims, patterns and sewing tools you could wish for (plus sewing machines and overlockers for those wishing to invest heavier)!

You’ll learn how to use a pattern block, sew darts, insert sleeves or add a sleeve facing, add a neck facing, put in an invisible zip, gather and attach the skirt and finish hems perfectly. What’s more you’ll get a truly professional finish while learning to use one of our Janome overlockers.

PATTERN CUTTING: MADE TO MEASURE BODICE PATTERN is the ideal (but not necessary) workshop to attend prior to this workshop. If you aren’t a standard size i.e. size 14 on the top and the bottom (and who is, let’s face it?), you can draft a bodice to your own measurements then bring it along to use.

As this is not a beginner’s workshop, you must already have some experience on a sewing machine or have attended one of our Beginner sewing workshops.

Ministry of Craft customers get 10% discount on the wide range of fabrics, haberdashery and sewing patterns at Bamber Sewing Machines and there are various discounts available on their sewing machines and overlockers. Discount codes and other offers from our other crafty friends will be emailed with your booking confirmation.

If the above date is not suitable or sold out, please have a look at our alternative date or contact us with the course name and we will get in touch if a place becomes available or when the next date goes on sale.

What to bring for Sew your own Fit & Flare Dress

If you order fabric from our online fabric shop, it will be waiting for you in our classroom on the day of your course or buy from Bamber Sewing Machines and get 10% off.

You will need 2.5m of 150cm wide fabric or 3.5m of 115cm wide fabric, please avoid bulky, stretchy or slippery fabrics; light to medium weight woven cotton is ideal.

A 56cm (22") concealed/invisible zip (be careful not to pick up a standard zip).

Matching sewing thread.

Ministry of Craft will supply the interfacing needed.

Contact us before the course if your bust circumference measures outside the range 80cm - 102cm so we can ensure there is a pattern block made in your size and so we can advise how much fabric to bring.

This workshop is part of a Sew Social day, there may be a short wait if the tutor needs to demonstrate a technique required for a different garment. It is, however, a great opportunity to pick up additional skills and chat about what others are doing.

Our sponsors, Janome, supply computerised sewing machines (CLX301) and where required overlockers (6234XL). Unfortunately, it is not possible to bring in your own machines.

Tea and coffee will be available at the workshop and there will be a break to eat, so please bring along some lunch or pop out to a local cafe.
