SEWING COURSES

Celia Banks is a qualified teacher and has been sewing for over 35 years. In the last few years she has attended courses and gained sewing qualifications in both the UK and the USA. She holds Instructor and Associate Educator certificates awarded by the Palmer Pletsch School of Sewing, in Portland, Oregon and a City and Guilds qualification in Tailoring. Her aim is to teach people techniques that allow them to produce well-fitting and well-made garments.

Palmer Pletsch
The Palmer Pletsch organisation, which is widely known in the States and Australia, owes its success to the efforts of its founder Pati Palmer. Pati has been designing for McCalls since 1980 and is their "Fit" expert. She and her business partner, Maria Alto, have produced several books and DVDs in the "Fit for Real People" series; these include jackets, shirts and trousers. These publications are the reference materials used for Celia's courses. It is the only organisation that runs an ongoing teacher's certification programme to ensure that the teachers maintain and develop their levels of knowledge year by year.

The Palmer Pletsch system is simple. For tops, jackets and dresses only the bust or high bust measurement is required, while for skirts and trousers only the fullest part of the hips needs to be measured. A commercial pattern in the correct size (from any company) is then tissue-fitted and altered for each individual. Extra wide seam allowances in the main seams are used during the next stage, which is pin-fitting the fabric for final, minor adjustments prior to sewing.

No time or money spent on cutting and sewing toiles.
Any commercial pattern may be used.
Students quickly learn to recognise their personal fitting challenges and the solutions and can apply these to any type of garment.
